Torrio, an independent Hip-Hop artist originally from Cleveland, Ohio has been professionally involved in the music industry for over twelve years. He went to school in Ohio for Music Business and Music Recording and he took his knowledge and started a rapidly growing music network that helps promote indie and major recording artists. He recently relocated his family to Gainesville, Florida and I joined him on one of his busy days to see what he is all about. A man in his 30's, Torrio could easily go for someone in their late 20's. He is quiet, yet serious and is extremely focused on his business. "I started building my websites 6 years ago and I could see that it was something independent musicians would go for," says Torrio. He has two websites, www.hardcorejamz.com which deals with Hip-Hop and R&B and www.hardcoremix.com which is a Rock, Pop, Country and basically every other genre. He first started with Hardcorejamz and went on Myspace to promote. "I would sit in front of my laptop for hours and send messages to every musician on there to tell them about the site and what it has to offer," says Torrio. Once he saw the potential from the Hip-Hop site, he decided to do the same thing with the Hardcoremix site that dealt with a mix of other genres. The sites get music submission from all over the world from as far as Ireland to Africa. "Promotion is key," he says. He now relies on other methods of promotion to not only get musicians to submit music to the site but also to get regular music listeners to the site. Both websites get steady traffic through search engines and word of mouth promotion. Revenue comes from ads on the site and one time fees for the musicians to upload their music. The sites have large followings and listeners can vote on their favorite song. It is all about discovering new music from indie bands and some major label acts as well. Both sites do interviews and will do music reviews and more. There is basically something for everyone from musicians to average music listeners. He also writes several blogs that deal with the music business. One of them is www.musicbiztips.info, which he started this year and it already has had over 29,000 visitors. From all his hard work he was able to quit his old day job and work full time from home. Basically a dream for most of us, including this reporter.
20 year veteran in the business.
